The state bought the forest in 2007 for $22 million. The area is open to the public for hiking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. There are also several cabins available for rent. In 2014, the Forest was designated as a National Natural Landmark. This designation is given to areas with unique natural features or ecosystems threatened or endangered.
